DIVA Challenge 346 - Phicops

DIVA Challenge #346 brings Phicops and Huggins together on one tile. I am familiar with both tangles so I appreciated the opportunity to play around with Phicops a bit. One Phicops I drew with the segments looking from the inside out and the other from the outside in. And no, there is no Betweed at the bottom, but the middle part got pulled up slightly, half revealing what is going on underneath Phicops' top layer...when drawn from the inside out. (I always wanted to know that)

Top tile I slightly manipulated in Photoshop, giving it more shadow...below is the original all handmade. I could have done the shading by hand, but I didn't dare. Each time I used the stump more and more paper fiber came off. This is watercolor paper and I completely soaked it in water several times because I wanted to try the soap bubble background effect. I can now safely say that the trick doesn't work with watercolor and you need distress ink, which I don't have. In case you are interested, click on the link.

Animal Happy Days

Shadow was in the play mood this morning. Hide and seek is on. He hides, I seek. After an hour I finally found something that indicated this could be my dog. Yes!

  1. A great tile Susie - I really like the two ways you've done Phicops. I need to try that!

I tried to use watercolour with bubbles last year with some success but it wasn't easy. I might try the way the video suggest though. If you start seeing bubble backgrounds you'll know it worked!

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words, Jem. I subscribed to your blog to not miss your soap-bubble-background series. Ha, did I just put you through the wringer?

  2. This is lovely. I never thought of doing phicops that way and great colours too.

    1. Thanks, Susan. I just thought that I didn't want to do a circle, so I ended up with two wavy lines and started the phicops lines from the corners.

  3. It is very hard to say which one of the two is my favorite. They both are lovely with beautiful colours. The way you draw the tangles are always a wonderful surprise for me.
I have grown up, surrounded by animals and they have never disappointed me.

    1. Thanks, Ria. This tile turned out a bit empty, but...
I, too, grew up with lots of animals, pets, exotics (remember, that was way back when...), and baby birds fallen out of their nests. I am glad I had animal loving parents!

  5. I love this! those little white "sparkles" at the tips of the Phicops...just stunning. I love the extra shading in your photoshopped version. And the colors are eye popping!

    1. Thanks, Heidi. Those little dots have a very important function. They make phicops phicops. If they were not there people would look desperately for phicops and wonder whether it had gone lost or I made a mistake. That happens when you draw on watercolor paper that has soaked in water far too long. No sharp/clear edges. So don't do that again, 'Heidi'.

  6. So very, very beautiful!!! I have had cats and dogs all my life, but no more since last Eastern. A 'wise' decision, but ... the house is soooo empty :-(

    1. Thanks, Anne. I am glad you liked the video. Only too often do we hear that when a kid arrives, the pet is ousted, back to a shelters.
I understand your decision not to have an animal anymore. I have the same thought for once Shadow is gone. Shadow is old and all I care now is to make sure he has a good life, spoiling him is a part of it. I enjoy my neighbor's cat and sometimes he even sleeps with us overnight - in our bed. No, I don't charge my neighbor B&B. Not yet! 😛

  7. Gorgeous tiles, Susie. It's always an inspiration for me to see your creative art. I think, I have to play with Phicops 🎨😃.
    Many greetings, Sabine

    1. Thanks, Bine. I love to play with tangles. Sometimes it comes out OK, and on other times not so OK. But that is OK, too. Having fun counts foremost. Good luck!

  8. I like both the tiles, but can see how Photoshop enabled you to really deepen the drama without shredding the paper--a huge advantage.

    1. Thanks, M, yes, in this case PS came in handy. I didn't want it too dark...just a little bit to give it some depth. Watercolor paper once fully soaked in water is not ideal for shading with a stump. It just is not!
