DIVA Challenge 329 & 330

Update August 27th - Quarter tile to full Plate using free online app.

I have read a few comments on how to get to a full plate when you have but one quarter tile. Photoshop is certainly a solution, but not everybody has it and not everybody knows how to work it. So I looked around and found a free online solution you guys might wanna try out. Please scroll down to after the video for link and short instructions to get you started quickly.

I didn't post DIVA challenge #329 last week because there just was nothing much to post and I didn't want to waste anybody's time visiting my 'nothing much'. So I start with DIVA challenge #330 and hang #329 at the end.

I am not much of a Mandala person. Not because I don't like Mandalas, but because Mandalas are not exactly easy to draw to look nice. I cannot draw 3 things the same way and by exaggerating my inability, nobody really notices there is anything 'not quite right'. In a Mandala, however.... Honestly, who wants to point to one's own weaknesses?

So here my version of a quarter Man-cum-Zen-Dala.

When you look at this tile and it doesn't make sense, well.....this tile is actually the result of two tiles. I took one and cut out the parts I didn't like most and glued the remaining tile on top of another tile I messed up. Now, if you still shake your head in disbelieve, you should have seen the two tiles when they were still TWO separate tiles!!!

The idea here was to make a reflection. Not 'mirror' reflection, but one part showing the finished renovation of a modern outer space housing estate while the neighboring part was still under construction. OK! Not a very clever excuse. I am open for suggestions.

Hence we have reached the section:

Animal Happy Day

Lucky dog that crossed this woman's path...

Free online app to get your quarter tile into a full plate

1. Goto http://www167.lunapic.com/editor/
2. Upload your quarter tile
3. Go to Adjust > Mirror and Copy = this will give you half a plate - the top half
4. Now save this half plate on your computer.
5. Open the half plate in one of your own image applications on your computer and turn it 90 degrees counterclockwise so the outer curve is to your left (you have now the left half of your plate)
6. Now go back to the online app and repeat the whole process from 2. Upload your rotated half plate and Adjust > Mirror and Copy and you have the full plate.

Contact me if you have questions.

Try also 3D cube or Kaleidoscope and ....and...

If you do give it a try, I would be happy if you sent me your link to your plates!

Good luck and have fun!!!!

  1. It's National Dog Day in the United States, so you picked a very appropriate animal story. OKay, that was starting this comment in reverse order. Your Diva challenge quarter tile is cool, but your compilations are beyond cool---I'm not sure what that's called these days---the bomb? dope? sick? Did you do the compilations using a photo editing program? I so need to up my tech game.
PS: I would stick with the modern outer space housing estate explanation of your last tile. It gives you plausible deniability. Plus, I might come back and look at again after a glass of wine. You never know, I might see it. Or, maybe it's a hitherto undescribed sea creature---with a reflection caused by viewing it through refracting water ---- or something like that. ;-) PPS: I think it might be time for me, and the dog, to call it a day.

    1. Thanks so much for your kind and helpful comment. I loooove the underwater creature version. Deep, deep underwater, in a space not yet discovered by none-tanglers. National Day in the US of A? Now? I thought that was July 4th? Now it is Harvey the Beast day. My thoughts are with all those afflicted and animals, too.
Thanks for the 'cool' for my compilations. I was surprised myself when I put the first few together. Maybe a stroke of luck? I am using Photoshop. However, if you are not familiar with PS or any other application and want a plate done from a tile, I am happy to assist.

  2. I do love that Plate tile of yours, so different and so gorgeous. Gorgeous is also the word for the other work you show us.
And, about saving dogs, have you ever watched Pitbulls and parolees?

    1. Yes, yes, Anne, I have seen Pitbulls and parolees. She helps dogs and ex-cons with one stroke. I also love the prison dogs programs!!! And thanks a lot for your kind comment about my tiles. #330, I agree with you, the single tile turned out well in a compilation; #329, without my glasses on (and I am half blind), they look OK, too.

  3. Wow Susie, I love what you have done with your beautiful first tile, all the results with Photoshop are fantastic, all definitely.(my fave is the first mosaic)
About 329, you have created two beauties too, especially the second one, that one is so typical you.
The result of the two tiles is also a succes. I admit that me too, do that some times. When I "think" that I messed up a tile, I cut also a piece off and go on with a new one (did that on my last picture on the latest blogpost. The tangle Zander was made between the two pieces, no one noticed and I'm satisfied about the result. Congrats for your fantastic result.
The last tile is a bit mystirious and I do like the result. It's very pleasant to see how you are exploring new ways to tangle...

    1. You are correct. Never would I have guessed the last tile to be a collage. I actually went back to check, just to make sure. But thanks so much for your comment on the 330 tile. You never know how they turn out until you multiply them, but ONE thing I knew for sure, never could I have matched the open ends, hence I covered the rings with Icanthis. You are too kind (and too blind) when looking at the 329 tiles, but I will say nicely "thank you, Ria" and leave my boxing gloves in the closet.

    2. When I came back to your side to see your reply I've read the other comments, so Susie, do you finally agree with me, your work is absolutely fabulous, also 329!

    3. Ai, ai, mam, I stand corrected. I do like 330 after photoshopping; 329...let's see, there is.....The book will be published after the New Year. You have to wait.

    1. Thank you so much for your very kind comment, Michele. It is the Icanthis tangle that makes the difference, but I never expected it to come out the way it actually did. Blame it on luck.

  5. These are all wonderful, and I had forgotten about International Dog Day, which Suzanne mentioned. :) don't you just love it! but my favorite of all your tiles this time is that mirrored one. VERY cool effect there. And I love the blue Icanthis plate...I'm in the market for a new laptop and I am going to get photo shop for sure. Your creativity with it just inspires me so much!

I published my blog: August 26th - I HAD NEVER HEARD OF NATIONAL DOG DAY!!! If this is not weird I don't know what is. And now I understand Suzanne!!! Thanks for opening my eyes. National Dog Day is in my calendar now.

  6. oh my gosh. where to begin? stunning, stunning tiles. i'm speechless.

your first "quarter tile": i love your icanthis. i am not good at that one (lack of practice and confidence) and will now get out my notebook and begin obsessively practicing. so, so beautiful. love the way you used flux around the outer border. i also have never heard of or seen "black mountain" and like that one a lot--whose is it? it's a first for me. sand swirl is a favorite of mine, but i always forget about it. gotta get back to that one too. and i think you used fescu in a particularly creative way here that defines the shape of the space so well. all in all, fabulous. love that quarter-tile.

but when you began playing with photoshop (an app i don't have, i'm sorry to say) and turning it...oh my god, what fabulous results. i'm hard-pressed to identify a favorite there. maybe the second one. but i love them all.

i particularly like the line work on your first tile for #329 too.

the bottom two tiles: first, i would never have thought of collaging. duh! great idea. i love your "reflective" blue and pink tile; i know that you didn't say that one was reflective--you were referring to the final one--but i think the yin/yang shapes imply reflection and enjoyed looking at that one.

your final tile has a wistful quality about it, at least to me. the right side is assertive...the left is smaller, more mysterious, and put together, they just struck me as wistful. don't know why.

i just loved this post. can you tell?

    1. Without a doubt!!!!!! This is the longest and most flattering comment I have ever received. I lift my imaginary hat to you, Meridiana, thank you so much!!!
Icanthis: We had to draw Icanthis for the letter I in March. I fell instantly in love with it!!! And I bet my Icanthis then was better than this one. Flux: I got the idea from the tangle Zhostovo border by Sue Jacobs. Black Mountain: no, no tangle. I gave it a name because "...and some lines" didn't sound as good as Black Mountain. So, please, be my guest and use it anyway you like.
Photoshop: Visit my page again and read the update. You might want to try an alternative free online app.
#329: When I made those tiles the electrical impulses in my brain were running havoc due to temporary defects in its wiring system. That is as good an excuse as any. Dare beat it!

    2. Thanks Susie...I had a wonderful free app on my iPhone that mirrored things beautifully. Recently they "updated" it and now I cannot get it to do what it did before (they ruined it). Phooey. Love the name "black mountain" and the effect too. I'll be playing with that one & crediting you.

    3. Online apps you don't have to download and they better ALWAYS work! I am looking forward to see YOUR play of Black Mountain...

  9. Dear Susie, thank you so much for the helpful advice on how to mirror my quarter tile. I followed it and I am happy with the result.

And I am very impressed by your artwork! I love the quarter zendala you did for the diva challenge. But you know which one of the tiles in your post is my absolute favorite: the one that you made from two different tiles. This one is absolutely stunning.

    1. Sigrid, you are most welcome! And I am glad you were able to follow my instructions.
Oh mai, the 2 messed up ones warped into 1 messed up ones. You are right, I would never had guessed. But I accept the compliment and thank you very much, Sigrid.

  10. PS: I tried to include a link to my plate in my reply as you had asked for, but for some reason that didn't work. If you are interested you will find a link to my plate as No. #51 on the diva challenge. As you did half the work by explaining how to copy the tile, I think you should be able to have a look at it... ;-)

    1. I am back. I visited your website and left a comment, but I wasn't able to send it. It said "Service Temporarily Unavailable". But I must say, your "Happy" with the result is incorrect! You have every reason to be absolutely and definitely proud about the fantastic plate result!!! But this is only possible because you drew a stunning quarter tile to begin with. Congratulations! Make sure you bookmark that site, the next "plate" challenge might just be lurking round the corner.
